Gregory Zupkus Sails the Mediterranean with Crystal Cruises

"From the Greek Isles to Sicily's volcanic vineyards, I discovered why the right cruise line transforms a Mediterranean voyage into something extraordinary."

I've always wanted to experience the Mediterranean by sea, to understand firsthand what it feels like to wake up in a new port each morning and watch the islands drift by as the sun sets over ancient waters. When the opportunity came to sail with Crystal Cruises from Athens through the Greek Isles, Turkey, Sicily, and finally to Rome, I knew this was the trip that would shape how I recommend this region to my clients forever.

We started with two days in Athens, staying at the Hera Hotel and taking a private walking tour through the city. There's something about walking those streets yourself, feeling the weight of history beneath your feet, that no guidebook can replicate. But it was when we boarded the Crystal ship that the magic truly began.

Island Hopping in Luxury

The Crystal ship itself was remarkable, with its restaurants and bars creating an atmosphere that felt refined without being stuffy. What struck me most was how the ship could pull directly into the Greek Isles, making each port feel intimate and accessible. Our first stop was Mykonos, followed by a day in Kusadasi, Turkey, where we arranged our own private tour. We visited Ephesus, the ancient city, and then something truly special: Virgin Mary's home, where Saint John the Apostle cared for her. Standing in that place, feeling that history, was profound.

Santorini came next, as stunning as everyone says but somehow more moving when you're arriving by sea. Then we had a day crossing the Mediterranean, just taking in the endless blue, watching other islands pass in the distance even when we weren't stopping. The way the ship cruised between the islands, with the sunset painting everything golden, created memories I still think about constantly.

Sicily Stole My Heart

What surprised me most was Sicily. We landed in Messina, and I wasn't prepared for how beautiful it would be. Seeing Mount Etna in the distance with snow on its peak, even though it was summertime, was surreal. We arranged a private wine tour to Gambino wineries at the base of the active volcano. Sipping wine grown in volcanic soil while looking up at that snow-capped peak, knowing it could erupt at any time, added an edge of wonder to every taste.

The ship then took us along the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento, where we had an entire day to simply absorb that legendary coastline. The way Crystal positioned the ship gave us views that felt almost theatrical, as if the landscape was performing just for us. Finally, we disembarked in Rome, staying at the Gamberasi Palace Luxury Suites. We did private tours of both the Coliseum and the Vatican, capping off a journey that moved from Greek mythology to Roman history without missing a beat.

Who This Journey is For

This trip is perfect for travelers who want adventure paired with elegance. If you love beautiful places, appreciate exceptional food and wine, and want a cruise ship experience that feels sophisticated rather than overcrowded, Crystal Cruises delivers. The key is the combination: like-minded passengers, stunning restaurants, thoughtful bars, and itineraries that bring you close to places most ships can't reach.

Now when I talk to clients about the Mediterranean, I speak from a place of real passion. I can describe watching the sunset as the ship works its way through the strait between Sicily and the Italian mainland. I can tell them about the snow on Mount Etna in summer, about the intimacy of arriving in the Greek Isles by sea. I learned that with the right cruise line and the right Mediterranean route, you create memories for life. That's what I bring to the table now, and I cannot wait to help my clients experience it for themselves.
